Solar Eclipse
This week there was a Solar Eclipse and for homework we found out what this actually was. Now we know that it happens when the moon moves between the earth and the sun and partially covers the sun from our view. We drew some posters to show how this occurs.

Visit from a Paralympian
Last week the Senior Syndicate were visited by a real Paralympian - Gary McMurray. He represented NZ in wheelchair rugby and won a bronze and gold medal. He spoke to us about how he was injured and how it has affected his life. Then he told us about his Olympic experience. We all felt he was inspirational and many of us will now set our own goals and strive to achieve them.
We wrote letters to thank Gary for visiting and included some of our thoughts and feelings ....
"The most interesting part was when you told us about being in hospital and how you had to wear a metal headband around your head with bullets to hold it in place. I felt really sad for you and probably everyone else did too.... You also inspired me to follow my dreams and even though you may get injured this should not stop you." (Meleseini)
"The whole time you were there I was hooked! You have given me inspiration to chase my dreams no matter what stands in my way. The words on the board gave me even more inspiration; success, challenging and attitude....I hope you can visit Sunnybrae soon and see how we have used your inspirational words." (Esther)
"My most favourite part was seeing your medals and touching them. The most interesting part was when we saw you wheelchair. I loved how it had tiny wheels at the back to stabilize the chair and allow it to turn sharply." (Nikki)
"We have learned a lot from you like treating people with problem the way you would like to be treated and how you can still work towards goals even if you are injured. The most important message you gave us is to never give up and never stop doing what you enjoy." (Angus)

"I learned that no matter what you can still do what you love...You are my paralympian inspiration." (Melefa)
"What I thought was the most interesting was your medals. The best one was from Sydney as Sydney is one of my favourite city's. What I learned was to always keep a good attitude and to challenge myself. Something to aim for would be smarter, faster, stringer and higher." (Losa)

Early in Term 2 Room 12 learned about ANZAC Day and after this thought about war in general.
We wrote poems that created images for the reader.
Some of these are below ....

WAR
by George
Black
smoke fills the air
Repeated
red and white explosions
A
whole country-side full of white ashes
Men’s
lives are shattered
Fear
embeds itself into a man’s heads
When
will it end?
Can
we survive the horror to come?
WAR POEM
by Hayden S
Lonesome
in the pitch black night
Every
time a gun goes off,
you
get the biggest fright of your life.
All
you can do for fun is to
sharpen
your knife or clean your gun.
War
is stupid!
War
is bad!
Most
people lose everything they had!
War
is greedy.
Makes
people needy
for
food and water.
Save
their son and daughter,
their
wife and also their own life.
BEFORE THE WAR
by Ha young
It
was blue sky before the war.
There
was green grass before the war.
There
were yellow flowers before the war.
There
was red fruit in the trees before the war.
There
were green plants before the war.
There
were brown trees before the war.
There
were many white houses before the war.
There
were many people before the war.
WHEN
THE WAR STARTED EVERYTHING TURNED THE OPPOSITE!
LIFE AT WAR
by Ellisha
War
is bloody, full with dull colours.
War
drapes its pain on everyone.
Mushy,
squishy, dirty clothes and rats
creatures
you have never known.
War
is frightening, scared with fear.
It
spreads its pollution everywhere
No
swimming pools or bouncy balls,
Just
a gun, it’s not much fun.
It’s
a nightmare come true
But
at least I am fighting for you
I
just wish that angel wings
Would
come and drape themselves on me.
In
my head I picture me at home with my family
But
no, I’m not there with the birds and the bees
I’m
squished up in a trench
Like
a bird in a nest.
WAR POEM
by Sam P
War
is hard and very bad
War
is emotional and very sad
War
is the horror of them all
Oh
Grandad, forget the war and let’s play ball
The
smoke of bombs, fill the air
With
shells flying everywhere
Men
are dying all around me
Oh
family, save me from war and let’s play ball
The
stench of Bully Beef fills my nose
All
the soldiers share a pose
I’m
glad to be going home
Come
on Sam, time to go back and play ball.

Homeward Bound by Jarrod
Dear Diary
I woke to hear my cobber saying that we were going home. It was the best news since my family wrote to me. We started to pack straight away and then we went to the boat. Everyone is happy to be going back to NZ. We have just set sail. I hope that I can make it back in time for my son’s birthday on the 1st of May. My family will be expecting me to be back then.

You Seok's Holiday
The Best Holiday Ever
In the holidays I went to Queenstown to do a Korean speech about what I want to be when I grow up.
I came 2nd in NZ. If I came 1st I would have gone to America .... but I was also too young.
At least I tried my best. I was the youngest there. They say that the next competition will be in Auckland.
I want to do it next time and come 1st. I have always dreamed of going to AMERICA!!!

Tryathalon Poems
During Term 1 we took part in the school tryathalon, either individually or as a team. Our class did very well with Liam winning the boys and Ellisha the girls. After the event we decided to write acrostic poems and here are some we published using pages or kidpix.
